We’re joining in with the International Association of Designers (IAoD) to celebrate this year’s World Design Days (12th - 15th April). This, the last day of the festivities is ‘Designers' Day’. A day for designers to highlight, celebrate and promote design as a profession.
We’re holding a spotlight up to the team of passionate, ‘Effective Creatives’ that work at Engine.
This year marks Engine’s 18th birthday. Established in London in 2000, we’re still an independent consultancy, wholly owned by the two founding directors, Joe Heapy and Oliver King. With backgrounds in industrial and product design, Joe and Oliver spearheaded the successful shift and use of design thinking to solve major business and social challenges.
In the early days, we relied on the vision of innovators and early adopters to bring work through our doors. Today we work with world-class brands in aviation, automotive, financial services, telecoms, retail and utilities, amongst others. Our HQ is in London, but we’re worldly in experience and reach, with a studio in Dubai and clients across different continents.
The Engine team comprises an international squad of ‘service geeks’, obsessed with making services better, with strong backgrounds in design, research, strategy, business analytics and organisational change. Together representing 14 nationalities and speaking 12 different languages.
As service design has become widely adopted as the methodology of choice for solving business issues, more mature organisations are also applying design-led approaches to improve their colleague experiences, interdepartmental services and business processes. For them, this is becoming the way they solve some of the most critical challenges their businesses face.
Much as the practice of service design has developed, we have also grown an award-winning team of creative folk and delivery expertise, with insight and ideas energising everything we do. Service design requires specific skills and attributes. Many of our team are multi-skilled and work across different disciplines, depending on the nature and focus of the project or programmes of work. We also have change leads within our business with backgrounds in management consultancy and ‘Enginites’ with experience of working client-side for well-known brands.
Everyone at Engine has particular specialisms and unique skills, but it’s the combined creative strength of the team that delivers real value to our clients. We’re people who enjoy exploring a challenge, working out solutions, polishing them and packing it all up as the tools and assets to drive improvement and performance. You can see from what we do that we're creative, process is important to us, and we enjoy understanding what makes people tick. Developing ways of thinking, finding an angle and making things seem as simple as possible, are all skills we value.
As a profession, we find service design a very rewarding field to work in. We all use services every day and know the difference an ill-conceived or beautifully designed one can have on our lives. Service quality and quality of life are interwoven, so services are important things to get right. Working across a wide variety of businesses, sectors and regions is exciting stuff. We don’t see it as a job – more of a calling to make the world a better place, one service at a time.
Opportunities like this to celebrate design as part of the World Design Days initiative are important. A recent Design Council report found that design skills contribute £209bn to the UK economy. The same report said at least 2.5 million people use design skills in their day-to-day work, which is equivalent to one in 12 workers. Because design is all around us, in our homes, our offices, travel networks, healthcare and education systems, its value is often overlooked. But it’s precisely because design is at the centre of our lives that we need to take the time to celebrate it.
We're always on the look-out for like-minded people to work with us at Engine. We’re interested in different levels of experience and expertise, so whatever your specialism, field or experiences or business challenge, we’d love to hear from you.
