Coming soon in the new year is a report commissioned by Engine and written by Lucy Kimbell.

Drivers of change for organisations around service over the next 3-5 years, is a bit of a mouthful but does what it says - exploring emerging motivations and priorities in near-future markets, both relating to service-specific organisations and those where service is involved.

The report was created through research interviews with a range of individuals from differing organisations and industries, market reports, surveys and academic research. Check out here for more information.

We're pretty excited and hope to engage all sorts of people in conversations around the identified Drivers and what effect they may have on a range of industries and ways of working.

The drivers will be released in its own blog in a Dickensian, serial type way so that we have some time to explore a range of opinions around each one. We're aiming to release 1 Driver every 2 weeks.

Please keep an eye on us and join in.

Engines work and experience in exploring the relationship between products and service, product design and service design, has been shared through the illustrious Fast Company's site Co-design daily.

Design Management Institute (DMI) honcho Thomas Lockwood in his piece for Co.Design, referenced our work with the light bulb behemoth Philips Lighting in their innovative shift from product to service provision and the ramifications of this on their business operation, ways of working and revenue model.

The article precedes Engines own article exploring the subject in more detail, coming out in the DMI Review in December 2011.

The article explores creating value beyond the product through services, and suggests propositions for organisations to become service-ready, both for internal and external solutions.

Engine’s work in Europe

Engine are very proud to be a part of some great service design projects happening in Europe.

In a new phase of our approach and reach, we are working with local Engine and client teams in Sweden and in Italy. This work is based on a project carried out and refined with our client in the UK. Now the methodology is being adapted and implemented across the client's European territories, being made relevant to local customers.

This is where our teams on the ground come in - as well as being fantastic designers and researchers, they help to provide us with cultural insights that translate our methodology for the local businesses. They connect us with the key needs and behaviours of local users and customers - the point from which we start all of our work.

Insights such as these can range from understanding customers' preferred channels for interaction with services to those that inform the right tone for communications.

It's exciting for us to be a part of the growing service design community in Europe, coming together to collaborate and seeing our project methodology adapted for new client organisations in new markets while working with local practitioners to deliver great work.

We look forward to carry on working with these teams and future opportunities to increase the reach and experience of service design.

A new P&O ferry for the Dover straights crossing, 'The Spirit of Britain', has recently been unveiled and put into action.

Engine Service Design were involved in the passenger experience design of the ship, to create great service experiences that differentiated ferry travel from the influx of budget airlines.

Through a range of research and on board exploration, Engine produced service principles to meet the needs of a variety of passengers, to enhance the experience and to delight passengers.

Engine's contribution to the new ship and new service experience has been acknowledged on a plaque on board 'The Spirit of Britain'.

Engine also feature in an article about service design in a new industry: ferry operators. The article is written by Bruce Peter and appeared in ShipPax DESIGNS 11 (September 2011) pp. 73-75
