Service Designer

Benedict Singleton - Associate

Benedict is a designer who specialises in researching and building new types of service and organisation. Since 2005 when he snuck across the road from the psychology department - where he originally trained - to the design school opposite, he has shaped his favoured rule of thumb - “work out what’s the right thing to design, and how we design that thing right”. Ben has worked with clients ranging in size from fledgling start-ups to multinational corporations, and has operated in fields as diverse as digital journalism, transport, healthcare, mobile services, and finance.

Ben is fascinated by how new forms of technology are making new forms of organisational set-up possible, and vice versa: something he’s explored at length in his PhD at Northumbria. In addition to working as a service designer at Engine, he also publishes widely on service design, architecture, and philosophy, and has been a visiting critic and lecturer at the Architectural Association, the Bartlett, and many other design schools in the UK and beyond.
